Grocery Bags

I've been meaning to make some heavy duty grocery bags for years.  Every time we go to the bulk store (Costco/BJs) and we would struggle to get all the giant-sized mouth washes and monster boxes of pasta into the house (they don't give you bags), I would say, "I'm going to make us some grocery bags out of that denim I bought years ago."

Yeah, right.

Well, now that we don't have a car we *needed* to have some reusable bags that could take some abuse.  The ready-made reusable bags seem to be light-weight, which is great for carrying around for spur of the moment shopping, but we like to *really* stock up when we shop.  That means our bags need to stand up to being chock full of sharp-cornered boxes and heavy jugs of orange juice.  They also need to weather the trunks of taxis or being set on the ground while we take a breather on the way home if we're walking.

The denim was a perfect solution.  It's heavy duty, washable, and will stand up to years of abuse.  I made the handles so they are long enough to fit over your shoulder, but short enough that if I'm holding the straps in my hands that the bag isn't scraping along the ground.

The first hem around the top was the zig-zag stitch to catch the inside raw edge..  For some reason, zig-zag stitching always looks really cheap to me.  I put a straight stitch on each side of the zig-zag and I like it a lot better now.  I left the bottom of the straps raw, so they are going to fray.  I was afraid of sewing through too many layers of denim.  But, I have to say, my trusty sewing machine did a great job.  It went through 6 layers of denim like it was butter.

I made two of them and I think they are going to be plenty big for our monthly-ish* shopping trips.  I might add some ties to the inside tops to help keep them closed, especially if we're going to put them in the trunk of a taxi.

I've seen those obnoxious Whole Foods bags that say "I used to be a plastic bottle" on the side ... which is highly incongruous when you see the cars people drive to Whole Foods to use their one little reusable bag.  Those bags totally irk me.  I've been joking that I wanted to stitch "I used to be a baby seal" on the sides of our new bags, but apparently it's bad enough that they are covered in flowers.

*We get all our staples like pasta, rice, etc. and all the heavy stuff on the big trips that we do every 4-6 weeks.  Then, on the way home from work a couple nights a week, I'll stop and get fresh vegetables to use for the next several dinners.  We did it this way before we got rid of the car, but it's a perfect set up now that grocery shopping is such a hassle.

Oh God, you have got to make some "I used to be a baby seal" bags. Dying laughing here!

I have a denim futon slipcover languishing in the basement -- I am so copying you and making grocery bags for myself out of it. Hope you don't mind. :-)

I walk with my shopping too so understand completely :@)

I recently bought a knitting book which had a pattern for a bag made out of strips of plastic bags but I didn't fancy knitting it...your idea is great...I've grown out of some cord trousers lately which would make a great really strong bag :@)

I would totally laugh if I randomly saw your 'baby seal' bags in public.

Awesome bags! I may need to make a few of those! I just hope MY machine can sew through all that denim!

6 layers of denim?? WOW. My jaw actually fell open in amazement. I don't think my machine would be able to handle that. I think just the thought of sewing through 6 layers of denim is making my machine cry and cower in fear in a corner.

And baby seal? Ha ha ha! Laughing so loud. I want to see that. Or actually...I want to see people's reaction to that.

nice job on the bag. i, too, really like the decorative look of the zigzag enclosed by straight stitches. the denim pattern looks very cute, and you chose the perfect scale to show how big the bag is. kudos!

I just wanted to say how great it is that you guys decided to stick it out without a car! We're doing almost the same thing. Our car was totaled in March and we decided to stick with the bicycles and the occasional taxi. One big difference is that we live in South Korea where bicycles are considered a form of transportation (instead of our homeland Texas where they're considered a nuisance...). I hope Philadelphia is more human-powered-transport-friendly.

I haven't made any bags *yet* but I'm eyeing all of the banners they have around here. They make banners to advertise EVERYTHING and they can't be reused- I don't think- and would make great lightweight tote bags. I'll let you know if I get around to it!

I would so love to have an "I used to be a Baby Seal" bag! Also you are definitely inspiring me to use some denim I have in my fabric stash for some heavy-duty errand bags... something that can handle a jug of laundry detergent or something.

Alice, I CANNOT believe you posted these bags. I'm crocheting some now out of plastic bags, but it's tough on the hands and SLOW. And everytime I go shopping and get another plastic bag I get so mad at myself for not just sewing up some bags. I had thought about using some of my hubby's old work jeans [I have a serious stash b/c I can't stand to discard them and they really aren't good enough to donate. So let's just say I'm even more inspired to get with it and get them done. Hmmm, long holiday weekend coming up may just have to put everything else aside and get this done. Great job as always! xoxo

I love these bags! My mom made me a green one just like these years ago and I carried my laptop around in it until just recently. There is something about a hand made bag that I just really love.

Laters.

I really like the accent of the straight stitch bordering the zig zag stitch.

Love that floral print on the denim fabric...the bag turned out awesome.

A baby seal! That is hysterical. I'll need to come up with something clever. Won't be as magic though.

Hahaha - oh I totally have one of those bags! However, I did not buy it for myself, my mum got it for free in New York. And I, like you, use MANY re-useable bags. I freakin' hate plastic!!!

P.S. Your bags are awesome. Kudos to you for sewing lots of denim :)

The bag looks great! Good for you making your own. I agree - some of those shop recycled bags are bot obnoxious AND lairy.

I gotta step up to the reusable bags. I know its important I just know I'm going to need a lot of them because I have a bad back and can't lug the giant ones around. Love that denim reminds me of my jeans in college

If you want some great giant bags, go to your local IKEA and buy their giant bags made of blue tarp material for just 59 cents each! I can take a week's worth of groceries home in two IKEA bags. Your bag is very pretty though. I just don't sew very well.

This bag is super cute, but you would be surprised how strong polypropylene bags are ($1 from Trader Joes). And they hold a lot! I like saving the environment and all, but my main reason for using them (at every store possible) is that they really are nicer than paper or plastic. They stand up! They have handles that go over my shoulder! They never rip! Anyway, though you might like to know :)
